Research & Studies in Medical Imaging & Optical Systems

We conduct research and provide university studies in the fields of medical imaging & computer-aided diagnosis and optical methods & light propagation modeling.

Medical Imaging

The Laboratory of Imaging Technologies conducts research in the field of medical imaging, especially in areas of multi-dimensional multi-modality image registration, image enhancement, image segmentation, image-guided interventions, and quantitative image analysis.

The introduction of new imaging modalities, which has expanded the role of medical imaging beyond mere visualization, gave the radiologist and surgeon at their disposal a great palette of different images, which provide information on both anatomy and physiology. Image processing and analysis is nowadays used increasingly throughout the clinical track of events, not only within diagnostic settings, but prominently in the areas of planning, performing and evaluating surgical and radiotherapeutical procedures.

Optical Systems

The Laboratory of Imaging Technologies conducts research in the field of optical methods and light propagation modeling for determining optical properties of turbid media utilizing optical fiber probes, spatial frequency domain and hyperspectral imaging, and digital holographic microscopy.

Light propagation modeling enables detailed design, evaluation and improvement of optical methods, and quantitative analysis of the acquired data. This allows us to obtain information about the spatial distribution of optical properties and the microscopic composition of turbid media. In the case of biological tissues, the extracted information can be utilized for early detection and monitoring of pathological changes. Microscopic composition and morphology can be used to monitor the pollution of ambient air with aerosols and water with microorganisms and other particulate matter, as well as to observe and evaluate complex phenomena in microfluidics. Optical properties can also be used for realistic rendering of complex scenes.

Research

We design and develop image processing, analysis and understanding techniques based on state-of-the-art approaches.

Education

We conduct courses on all university study levels, and supervise bachelor, master and doctoral theses.

Dissemination

We publish our research in high-ranked scientific journals, and present it at prestigious international conferences.
